FISHERS OF MEN BIBLE INSTITUTE
In January 1996, Ray and I opened the classes to our first effort to build leaders in the harvest field God gave to us. It was Northern Mexico in the city of Torreon. The first student to tell me he couldn't continue because he had no money to pay his tuition was Raffa Rios, who today, continues to Pastor with his wife Argentina at their church, Oasis of Faith in Torreon, MX. Bishop Raffa is the youngest ever Bishop ordained by ICCI, formerly led by the dearly departed, Archbishop Greg Holley and is licensed under Bishop Delbert Herrin and Kevin Herrin at the Fellowship in Texas City, Texas. He and Tina were to join us but Raffa fell critically ill but will join us when we return to East Africa August 15, 2024.
MAKING PROGRESS
We've come a long way since 1996.Those humble beginnings are ever before me. But, today I'm looking at a bright future for all that we're doing both with the #WEFEED program of Hope4Them and the Equipping of Shepherds with FMBI. There's never been a better time to connect with us as a progressive partner who prays and partners! Our Global team stretches across oceans and will shortly reach as far South as Brazil.
We started FMBI in Kenya in 2016 and it has spread now to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, The DRC and we expect students from Burundi and others north of Kenya. We have our hearts set on S E. Asia and the doors are open wide for us in Malaysia as well as Viet Nam and other islands throughout the Philippines.
Many men and women will make long journeys to meet us in Nakuru, Kenya next week. For us here in this nation, a Degree in Theology is a click away. For the Shepherds in oppressed, developing countries its 100's of "klicks" away.
Some I am helping with bus fare, others with a room and food but I cant help them all. Oh, they'll have their enrollment fee of $5.00 but they'll need materials too, and can't possibly cover the $125 for those additional costs. Though their soul longs to be empowered and changed.
Remember the story of Raffa ?
I sent him back to class never to tell me he couldn't attend because of no money. SHOOT! I didn't have any money either.
At that time I was collaborating with Oral Roberts University and while they let us in cheap - it wasn't free. I was facing a huge bill. But for Raffa, I reached out to a couple of friends to underwrite his semester and my friend Sam Antley mailed a check for $450. Now, what if I had said, I'm sorry Raffa, if you can't pay, I can't carry you.
